Task 6: Audience Research

My Audience Research.

Qualitative Data:

  • In order to collect some qualitative data, I decided to ask a few friends and family, of different ages and occupations what they thought about the following clip of Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

  • I decided to create a spider diagram that shows who interviewed, their age, gender and demographic.

  • This diagram allows me to easily make connections between the feedback I received and the type of person it is coming from. However, the only problem with my research and diagram is that it is no representative of all ages and demographics.

The feedback (Still awaiting responses):

  • Lucy:

  • From Lucy's feedback I am able to assume that coming-of-age films appeal to audiences because they are relatable, have a good narrative and how the music makes the experience more joyful.

  • Charlie:

  • From Charlie's feedback I know that coming of age films appeal to him because of how it addresses him. I also know that the music keeps him engaged.

  • My Dad:

  • My dad's feedback shows me that the clip reminded him of when he was at school. He also enjoyed the narration and the music.

  • My Mum:

  • This shows that my mother enjoyed the sound and it reminded her too of her days at school. My mother also felt like she was able to relate to Ferris' parents trying to deal with a sick child.

  • Sarah:

  • The clip didn't appeal to Sarah. She believed it was cliche and didn't like the way he spoke to the camera. Despite this, she still found it humorous. From this clip she formed the impression that the film is bad.

  • Alice:

  • Alice found the clip entertaining. She enjoyed the narrative so far and found Ferris' personality to be funny. She also enjoyed how dramatic Ferris is and how he makes huge jumps between topics.

Quantitative Data:

Who watches coming of age films?

  • This table shows a complete break down demographic in the public to show who likes what films. From this chart we can see that only 22% of males under 35 watch coming of age films while only 9% of males who are 35+ watch coming of age films. However, 36% of females under 35 watch coming of age films and only 5% of females who are 35+ watch coming of age. This shows that females under 35 are most likely to watch coming of age films. However, if the age is over 35 then males are more likely to watch coming of age films. Next, We can we social class. Only 9% of people with social class A/B watch coming of age films, 14% of people with the demographic of C1 watch coming of age films, 23% of people with the demographic of C2 watch coming of age films and lastly, 15% of people with the demographic D/E watch coming of age films. This shows that coming of age films are most popular with C2, skilled manual workers. From this graph, I am able to determine that the most common watcher of coming of age films is a female under the age of 35 and is a skilled manual worker.
    • Over all, I believe the the primary audience for coming of age films are teenagers (13-18). this is because the film is made to appeal to them as the topics are often relatable. Coming of age films often contain childish humour, therefore it is aimed at teens. The secondary audience could be either children or adults. I believe it is most likely children because children are no far of becoming teenagers. Where as adults have already lived the teenage years.

  • Survey:
    • I have created a survey so I will be able to gather more data. However its only been up for a few days. So I'm going to leave it to gather more data.

What have I learnt?
  • From this task I have learnt what techniques films use to engage their audience. From my qualitative data I have learned that my friends and family enjoy the sound and narrative. I was also able to find more specific reasons as to why people enjoy coming of age films. From my quantitative data I have learnt that there is a specific audience that watches certain films. From this I now know how to appeal to my page audience.
